You can now discover the stories from below stairs at Blenheim Palace, with a visit to the formerly hidden parts of the palace. I was recently invited to Blenheim to see it for myself, and it provided a very interesting glimpse into a different world in the story of life at a large country house.
Several rooms have been recreated so that visitors can see for themselves what life might have been like for the myriads of servants taking care of the every day needs of a wealthy family in the 1890s.
You can step back in time and uncover the fascinating stories of those who kept the palace running smoothly. As you wander, you’ll hear the sounds of staff preparing for important visits and learn about the daily lives and roles of the kitchen staff, butler and household team who served the Marlborough family. Discover how these dedicated individuals played an essential part in the operations of Blenheim Palace, from managing grand events to maintaining the estate’s gardens.
You can also book a ‘Downstairs Tour’ at Blenheim, which gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of Palace staff over the centuries. Household staff were essential to the aristocratic way of life. Visitors can wander through the network of corridors, see the iconic bell system as well as some areas which are still in use by Palace staff today, including the kitchen. Along the way, hear about the gossip and perks of the job from the staff’s point of view.
Blenheim Palace is open daily and if you buy a one day ticket, you get to come back for free within 12 months. Visit blenheimpalace.com for more details and to book.
