Oakleaf, a leading mental health charity in Surrey, has launched a creative and impactful campaign to raise awareness about mental health in the local community. With the support of Guildford Borough Council, and design agency Yazaroo, Oakleaf has placed thought-provoking posters on bins throughout Guildford High Street. The campaign, designed pro bono by Yazaroo, features clever puns that encourage the public to “Bin Stigma Not Mental Health” and “Don’t Discard Your Mental Health.”

The eye-catching posters aim to spark conversations and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, as well as raising awareness of Oakleaf’s local services. Leaning into the fact the posters are on bins, which are not normally a particularly appealing location, the campaign delivers a powerful message, making mental health a visible and approachable topic for everyone in the community.

“Oakleaf is helping me every day to see that I am worthy and valuable, regardless of the situation I find myself in with my pain, my mind, or my future.” Oakleaf client

Key messages of the campaign:

  • Don’t Discard Your Mental Health: Emphasizing the importance of prioritizing mental wellbeing.
  • Bin Stigma Not Mental Health: Encouraging the public to reject negative attitudes towards mental health issues.

Jen Clay, Head of Fundraising & Engagement at Oakleaf, said, “We wanted to create a campaign that would catch people’s attention in their daily lives and make them think about mental health differently. By using bins, we hope to convey that mental health should never be discarded or overlooked.”

“Oakleaf Enterprise is an amazing charity doing vital work in Guildford. We at Yazaroo were delighted to be asked to bring our creative know-how to this campaign and we hope that its impact is felt by people across Guildford who will benefit from Oakleaf and the services they provide.” – Ed Schofield, Managing Director at Yazaroo

Oakleaf’s initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance mental health support and awareness in Surrey. The campaign’s unique approach has already garnered positive attention locally, and Oakleaf aims to amplify its impact through digital platforms.
