ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

Known as the season of new life with blooms of fresh buds and re-emerging of beautiful colours.  We are here to share GreenThumb’s expert advice to help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months. Preparing your garden to spend time in it with family and friends requires a little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of.

Mowing
Ensure your lawnmower is serviced and the blade is sharp, a good clean cut will help encourage growth.  When cutting set the cut height so that you never cut more than ¼ of the grass plant in any one cut (cutting weekly will help this).  Cutting the lawn too short will weaken the grass plant causing it to struggle in dry periods, it can also encourage moss.  To create a lush thick lawn, keep the cut height to minimum of 1” and increase this to up to 2” in dry periods.  Cut the lawn in different directions through the season to avoid trailing grass along the surface.

Shade
Take a good look at those border plants, shrubs and trees, they all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn’s space and weakening it by denying it light.  If so, then it’s time to get the secateurs out!

Clean Up
If you haven’t already done so, rake away those dead leaves, twigs and branches. The less debris on the lawn, the healthier it will be.

Weather damaged patches
Scarify and aerate these areas to reduce thatch and dead grass (you can use a rake and a garden fork if you do not have a scarifier or an aerator).  To fill any bare patches, apply a mix of seed with a little fine soil when the ground temperature starts to warm up.

Watering
Grass is a very hardy plant, but in a prolonged period with no water it will struggle.  Water the lawn once or twice a week to help it stay green in dry periods, typically half an hour should be enough to soak the roots.  Water in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation.

Lawn Feed
Apply a Spring lawn feed and weed kill treatment to kick start growth and control weeds.  Alternatively ask a lawn care company such as GreenThumb to provide a cost for applying their professional feed, the product will last longer, give a greener lawn and be cheaper than a DIY approach.

Weed Control
Spring is the most active growth period for the lawn, however don’t forget the weeds will also be growing at their faster rate.  This is the best time of year to apply a herbicide or weed control product.  Please read the label carefully and only apply products that are suitable for lawns otherwise you’ll kill the weeds but also the grass.

GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for lawns in the U.K. We have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition into a healthy, fresh and beautiful lawn you can be proud of.
