ADVERTORIAL
This year, Cedar Nursery on Horsley Road in Cobham marks a significant milestone: 40 years of supplying Surrey and the surrounding areas with high-quality plants, distinctive planters and beautifully considered outdoor living products.
Founded in 1986 by Tim and Kate Sharples, the nursery has evolved considerably over the decades. What began as a destination for exceptional plants and trees has grown into a curated hub for luxury garden furniture, bespoke planters and the design and supply of stunning outdoor kitchens.
From the outset, Cedar Nursery set itself apart by offering plants that were a step above the ordinary – varieties not typically found in a run of the mill garden centre. While this commitment to quality remains unchanged, the way we use our gardens has transformed dramatically, driving demand for more individual, design-led products.
One of the most notable additions has been the planter showroom, introduced by Tim to meet customers’ desire for something truly bespoke. Here, visitors can select the precise shape and colour of their planters – moving far beyond off-the-shelf designs. Far from playing it safe, customers are increasingly embracing bold choices, with pink and orange proving to be surprisingly popular.
Garden furniture has followed a similar trajectory. While the internet offers endless mass-produced options, discerning customers continue to value the tactile experience of a physical showroom, where quality and craftsmanship can be properly appreciated. In response, Cedar Nursery now showcases a carefully selected range of luxury garden furniture brands, including an elegant French collection that allows customers to choose from an extensive palette of colours.

Changing weather patterns have also reshaped garden design. With warmer summers becoming the norm, there is growing demand for outdoor structures such as pergolas and verandas. Several are on display at the nursery, including advanced bioclimatic pergolas that automatically adjust their louvres in response to the weather – an ideal solution for the unpredictability of the British climate.
Outdoor cooking, too, has come a long way. Where a simple barbecue once sufficed, gardens are now seen as a true extension of the home. Fully equipped outdoor kitchens are increasingly sought after, while even traditional charcoal barbecues have embraced technology, featuring digital controls and precision cooking.
This shift towards outdoor entertaining led to the introduction of Kitchen in the Garden as part of the Cedar Nursery family. Specialising in exceptional outdoor kitchens – whether for a complete garden redesign or a standalone feature – the showroom allows customers to explore how outdoor cooking can seamlessly fit into their lifestyle.
While trends and tastes may have evolved over the past four decades, one thing has remained constant: the value of expertise and exceptional customer service. As a local, family-owned business, Cedar Nursery continues to deliver both – just as it has for the past 40 years.
