Last term Jon Edgar, the renowned sculptor, visited Billingshurst Primary School, one of three local schools selected for the Arts Society West Sussex’s Young Arts project.

Years 5 and 6 worked on a life sized head of Governor David Lowe  as well as modelling their own smaller portraits of him.  They built up their heads methodically and carefully adding pieces of clay to a vertical head peg.  Jon’s enthusiasm encouraged the children to  observe and to create some impressive sculptures.

Jon, whose Environment Series of Heads includes scientist James Lovelock and the Green MP Caroline Lucas, emphasises how observation skills can contribute to self esteem and self confidence.  This project ensures these vital fine art skills are experienced in our local schools.

The Arts Society West Sussex aim to inspire young people with a lasting enthusiasm for the arts and provide opportunities to expand their horizons through enriching arts projects.  The Society’s talks are held on the first Tuesday afternoon of each month at Fittleworth Village Hall.
