The National Trust is moving closer to opening its new visitor facilities at Winkworth Arboretum, as the building reaches the stage of structural completion. With scaffolding now removed, visitors can catch their first glimpse of the specially designed gateway building, that has been taking shape over the past year. Visitors will need to wait until its planned opening in Spring 2026 to see inside.
Designed by IPT Architects, the new facilities are a thoughtful response to both the natural surroundings and the needs of visitors. Drawing inspiration from the arboretum’s iconic boathouse, the building is clad in larch wood that will gently weather over time, blending seamlessly into the woodland landscape. Inside, expansive picture windows frame seasonal views, echoing founder Dr Wilfrid Fox’s vision of ‘painting with trees’.
More than just a beautiful structure, the new facilities address some very specific needs raised during the public consultation. Specifically, the outdated toilet facilities, the lack of indoor café facilities and seating; and congestion on the main road during busy times of year. It is planned that income generated from the improved facilities will enable continuing restoration of the Arboretum and guarantee its care for future generations.
The development includes three main areas: a welcoming visitor reception, café, shop and toilet facilities including a Changing Places toilet so a wider group of visitors can visit. A new pay-and-display car park, set further back from the main road, will feature electric vehicle charging points, helping reduce congestion and support sustainable travel. For visitors, it will mean they’ll be able to enjoy the scenic landscape whatever the weather and whatever the season.
Speaking about this major milestone, General Manager, Grenville Chaganis, said “It’s been a long journey for these new facilities. Now that the scaffolding has come down, the building looks fantastic. There’s still work to be done, but there is renewed excitement amongst the team and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors when the building opens next spring.”
