The Gallery with Garden, in the village of Shere, highlights the vast and varied work of local artist John Rich. Set up by John’s family, his wife and muse Elizabeth Rich and his sons, The Malt House displays more than two hundred original artworks across three floors.
A truly unique experience to visit, the artworks vary much in style and form, including paintings, sketches and sculptures, ranging from abstract artworks to more classical portraits, landscapes and still life studies. Much of the art on display is also available for sale.
The Gallery with Garden offers an intimate view into the life of this talented artist, in the home that he lived in and where he had his studio, curated by those who loved him, the display feels like a thoughtful tribute and a true celebration of creativity. On the literature for guests to read at the gallery, he’s described as a painter, sculpture, picture restorer, writers, husband and father, emphasising his varied roles in life and the importance he placed on family.
The garden, which is also part of the Shere Open Gardens event taking place Sunday 29th June, is designed and maintained by Elizabeth. Beautifully planted, with charming and unexpected elements, the garden offers a space for quiet reflection and aims to reflect the harmonious life-long relationship between the artist and his muse.
Liam Rich, John’s son described the Gallery with Garden as a ‘step towards regaining the recognition that eluded [John] for many years’ and it certainly feels to be the case. An incredibly enjoyable and worthwhile way to spend a few hours – not to be missed!
The Gallery and Garden is open at weekends from 12pm to 6pm. The entrance is located on Shere Lane, between the William Bray pub and Surrey Trek & Run.
