It is hard to imagine a greater contrast between the first and second halves of this programme. Rachmaninov’s Vespers, the first part of his All Night Vigil written for services in Russian Orthodox churches, are solemn and spiritual, whereas Vivaldi’s ever-popular Gloria is wonderfully effervescent, exciting, music.
