The theme this year being The Best of British.
The origins of the Fete dates back to at least 1848, a letter from the Tilford club secretary to Mr Ware of Tilford House asking for support and saying Mr Stovold of Tilhill has given a fat sheep for the feast on June 26th 1848. No Fat sheep this year but plenty of street food stalls including low fat Quorn burgers. Hmmm the 1848 offering sounds good to me but we move with the times.
The Fete kicks off with the children’s parade a joyous celebration of youth and exuberance. There will be the usual stalls and some unusual stalls as well, featuring many local small businesses showing their crafts, food and drink. The fun fair and giant inflatable slide will keep the kids amused. Bring the pooch and enter the dog show, cutest dog, the dog looking most like its owner, the dog with the best trick.
The traditional tea tent will be hosted by the W.I so expect yummy cakes as well. For those with more need of hydration the Barley Mow will be running the themed bar, with some fine local ales.
Get in training for the Family challenge, but it’s not too serious, think sack race and egg and spoon. Local beef will be on display, the two-legged variety in the Tug of War, ok some more belly than beef to be honest.
Tilford’s got Talent but without the Simon Cowell put downs, a chance for youngsters to show case their talents in a friendly supportive venue be it singing, dance, bands, musicians or entertainers.
On the river will be the Duck Race. Don’t worry no ducks will be harmed in the race, think Christopher Robins poo sticks but with plastic ducks, back a duck and you could win a quacking good prize. Just keep your fingers crossed that Dave the Duck doesn’t win, if he does no one wins! Still it is all in a good cause as it contributes to a local charity.
Now one of the favourite events is the themed raft race, get a team together, build a raft, the theme is The Best of British, imagine a raft full of Winston Churchills’, Emma Raducanus’ or the Sex Pistols. Prizes for the best theme and the fastest raft. Get your family and friends together for a raft building BBQ day. A word of warning build the raft before the drinking but think of the theme after a few, that normally works best.
Then its all back to the green for about 7.30, the highlight of the day, picnic on the green and dancing to a live band in the Marquee and best of all its free entry. If you can’t be fussed to do a picnic there will be street food stalls, great pizza from the Barley Mows wood fired oven, or even get food delivered in. It is a great night out and you know you deserve it.
If Carlsberg did village fetes, they would do Tilford Village Fete.
