“The story behind the Crystal Palace High Level railway” a presentation by Bernard Winchester is the subject of the next meeting of Dorking branch of the Locomotive Club of Great Britain.
The Crystal Palace was for many years Great Britain’s most popular visitor attraction and the railway played an important part in bringing millions of visitors to it. Bernard’s talk will cover who built the railway and why, its grand terminus, its chequered history including plans to extend it to Sanderstead and Oxted and its ultimate fate.
Bernard is a retired lecturer with a particular interest in local history and railways.
As always, anyone interested in railways is welcome at the Friends Meeting House, Butter Hill, South Street, Dorking RH4 2LE. Admission is £4 for members and £5 for non-members, including refreshments (cash or card payment accepted).
