MOTET & The Joe Garland Band – Jazz Funk Double Bill featuring 2 amazing 8 piece bands
Think Yellowjackets, Al Jarreau, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars
To celebrate the final of the current, highly successful, BEAT Series at the Boileroom, we are presenting an all-star double bill of high energy jazz funk and soul. Two eight-piece bands with full horn sections, and plenty of fire. Gifted guitarist and rising star of the UK jazz scene, Joe Garland, will be followed by the high-class jazz funk outfit, MOTET. This show is a must for anyone who enjoys Guildford Jazz gigs at the Boileroom and The Stoke.
MOTET brings rich horn arrangements and high energy rhythms to well-known soul and jazz funk songs, from artists such as Yellowjackets, Al Jarreau, Bruno Mars and Stevie Wonder. Composer, arranger and drummer, Seb Guard, is the source of much of the band’s creative arrangements, with fellow rhythm section Robin Clayton (bass), David Kirby (keys) and Andy Jackson (guitar) are joined by MOTET’s accomplished horn section of Sam Parker (saxes), Tom Parsons (trumpet) and Stuart Goodburne (trombone). The band delivers a modern, danceable groove that is fresh and envigorating – the essence of the BEAT vibe! Motet is joined by accomplished live performer and in-demand session vocalist, Nadie Keating. Nadie has sung for top artists such as Clare Grogan (Altered Images), Belinda Carlisle, Level 42 and Gary Brooker (Procol Harum).
The Joe Garland Band. Joe is one of the UK’s most exciting and talked about young guitarists emerging onto the London scene. Joe’s virtuoso playing combines a fluent, melodic style with an effortless technique and rhythm. He brings his new 8-piece band, which includes a powerful 4-piece horn section, performing Joe’s originals in the vein of Yellowjackets, John Scofield and Tribal Tech. Joe has performed as a leader and as a sideman across the UK, from the Liverpool Philharmonic and Guildford’s Boileroom to the Royal Albert Hall, the Vortex and the 606 Club in London. “Joe Garland displays a mastery of his instrument which is immediately apparent, and which sets him apart from his peers” (Jazzwise 2024).
