Get ready for Advent with our Nearly Christmas concert.
James Whitbourn’s Missa Carolae was written in 2004 for the 1400th anniversary of Rochester Cathedral. It sets the familiar Latin Mass text to equally familiar traditional carol tunes, with organ accompaniment and treble solos. Two works written by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the Three Choirs Festival complete the programme. His Five Mystical Songs (published 1911) are a staple of the English choral repertoire, both as a complete collection and as stand-alone pieces. Vaughan Williams sets five poems by George Herbert (1593-1633), al of which feature a baritone soloist. Fantasia on Christmas Carols (1912) is based on a collection of folk carols, many of which were collected by Vaughan Williams and Cecil Sharp. The choir will be joined by organist Steve Bowey (St Mary’s Church, Shaw) and baritone Joey Edwards (Tenebrae Associate Artist, 2022/23).
