Our meeting at 2pm on Tuesday 11 February features a presentation entitled
The Interurbans of San Francisco
by
Ian Gledhill
Ian is a well-known specialist in electric railway history and his previous Dorking talks have covered Brighton trams and the Volks Electric Railway.
In California they did things on a bigger scale, and this event recounts the fascinating story of the electric and street railways that once criss-crossed northern California and the San Francisco Bay area. At its peak, the state contained 1,295 miles of interurbans, ranking it third among all states, with most of the network concentrated around San Francisco/Oakland and Los Angeles.
As always, anyone interested in railways is welcome at the Friends Meeting House, Butter Hill, South Street, Dorking RH4 2LE. Admission is now £4 for members and £5 for non-members, including refreshments.
