Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse

Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse is a charming, old Surrey barn that offers simple, overnight accommodation in south-east England in surroundings superb for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between April and October.

Similar to, but more basic than a Youth Hostel, it is ideally located on the North Downs Way and Sustrans cycle route 22 between Guildford and Farnham, at a point not served by any Youth Hostels.

Their wonderful old, listed building was sympathetically restored by a dedicated group of volunteers in 2005 and is still maintained and supported by many of the original members of the charity. The committee is made up of environmentalists and lovers of the outdoors who want to keep the hostelling tradition alive for like-minded people.

They have rainwater harvesting, solar electricity and solar hot water and the restoration that was carried out exposes the traditional and sustainable construction methods. A lockable cycle storage shed is available – designed by cyclists for cyclists! In addition to the sleeping area there is also a communal kitchen and a shower-room. The barn does its best to cater for people with disabilities.

Project Oasis North Downs is a registered charity that was originally set up to achieve this ambitious project. The charity’s role now has progressed into one of maintaining the barn into the future.
