First and Second Act is a popular local drama group based near Farnham led by inspirational drama teacher, acting coach and director Ruth Ahmed. Well known and admired for her imaginative productions at a number of community theatres, Ruth has been growing the confidence and creativity of youngsters at her weekly sessions for the past 18 years.
Drama has many important life lessons for youngsters in this technological age. What stands out about Ruth’s clubs is that they are fully focussed on the individual personal and character development of young people. They are not about churning out stage school carbon copies. They are a safe space for young people from all walks of life, preferences and backgrounds; welcoming and inclusive.
And what a success story this is, a number of her students have gone on to take part in local theatre productions and quite a few have gone on to work in the profession. Of course, not all her students want to pursue a theatrical career, but they all enjoy the benefits of enhanced personal presence and self esteem and the valuable experience of great team work.
The emphasis in Ruth’s sessions is always on fun and creativity – the ideal environment for learning. Activities range from drama games and improvisations to creating characters and original devised scripts. Every year, at the end of the summer term the groups present a public performance for family and friends.
First Act is for children from 8-10 years old (school year 3 to year 6) and Second Act for ages from 11-16 (school years 7-11). The sessions run in conjunction with school terms.
Ruth is always happy to welcome new members and introduce them to the magical world of the theatre.
First Act: Fridays 4-5.15pm Tilford Institute. Second Act: Thursdays 7.15-8.30pm Marindin Hall (Frensham)
