Eco-friendliness is something that businesses of every shape and size can get into. It’s something that’s inherently ethically desirable, but it’s also desirable for commercial reasons. By going green, in theory, you’ll be able to reduce spending, improve your public image, and provide a more satisfying workspace for your employees.

Let’s take a look at some of the measures you might deploy to improve your green credentials.

Use alternative energy sources for power
If you’re dependent on burning gas for your heating, then you’ll have a substantial carbon footprint. On the other hand, if you’re able to bring in alternative technologies like solar panels and heat pumps, you’ll be able to reduce your emissions (and your outlay) in the long term. Solar panel and air-source heat pump installation are both, therefore, worthwhile.

Incentivise the right kinds of transport
Give your workers an incentive not to drive, and they’ll be less likely to drive. This means that your business will indirectly prevent carbon from being released into the atmosphere.

The way you do this might vary depending on the makeup of your business. For some, a carpooling scheme might work. For others, public transport subsidies and discounts might be better. For some workers, walking or cycling into work might be possible. Provide something as simple as a bike rack and a changing area, and you might find that you can cut your emissions effectively and instantaneously.

Source goods and services from sustainable sources
When considering the environmental impact of your business, you’ll want to consider not only the emissions you generate directly on your premises, but also the effect you have on the broader supply chain. Make sure that you’re diligent when you choose your clients, and use schemes and bodies like the Forest Stewardship Council to ensure that the materials you’re sourcing have been extracted in a responsible way.

Reduce, reuse, recycle
Installing recycling bins on your premises isn’t enough. You need to change your mindset when it comes to the waste you’re generating. If you’re throwing away massive amounts of cardboard every week, then recycling can actually be quite energy-intensive. Instead, look for ways of reducing your use of these materials, and seeing how they might be reused afterwards.
